E&O insurance, answered plainly
Short answers to the questions brokers and business owners ask before they apply.
What is errors and omissions (E&O) insurance?
Errors and omissions insurance, also called professional liability insurance, covers claims that your professional advice, design or service caused a client a financial loss. It pays defence costs and damages for alleged negligence, mistakes or missed deadlines in the work you deliver, subject to the policy terms.
How is an E&O premium calculated?
The main factors are your profession, annual revenue, the limit and deductible you choose, claims history, and where you operate. This portal applies rate tables for more than 200 professional classes and shows an indicated premium on screen. Anything outside the standard tables goes to an underwriter.
Is the indication a firm quote?
No. It is a non-binding indication based on the answers provided. Final terms need underwriter review, a signed application and the insurer's policy wording. Most clean risks in the standard classes see the indicated figure hold; anything flagged for review is confirmed by an underwriter within one business day.
Who can use this portal?
Retail insurance brokers submitting for a client, and Canadian business owners buying for their own firm. Coverage is available across Canada except Quebec, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
Which professions are eligible?
Engineers, architects, accountants, land and quantity surveyors, real estate professionals, IT consultants and software developers, management and marketing consultants, and dozens of other consulting classes. Contractors can be rated for general liability. Limits go up to $5,000,000.
Can I add general liability or cyber coverage?
Yes. Commercial general liability and cyber can be added in the same application and are itemized separately on the indication. Cyber limits of $25,000 to $100,000 are handled in-house; higher limits are referred.
What do I need to apply?
Your business name and contact details, what the business does, years in business, employee count, Canadian and U.S. revenue, and a few profession-specific questions. If you have a current policy or another insurer's application, upload it and the portal fills most of the form for you.
